Enterprise {gtsummary}: Themes, ARDs, and Custom Extensions for Pharma

Workshop@R/Pharma 2026

🗓️ Monday, September 28, 2026 · 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM PDT 💻 Online via Zoom 📝 Workshop Registration

Description

{gtsummary} is the most widely used R package for creating presentation-ready summary tables across the R ecosystem. Because it is built for broad utility across multiple domains, its flexibility and customization ability lends itself to the diverse needs in clinical trial reporting.

In this workshop, we will begin with a brief overview of {gtsummary} fundamentals before diving into the key tooling and strategies that make enterprise adoption smooth and effective. Participants will learn:

  • Analysis Results Data (ARD) Integration: How {gtsummary} and ARDs work seamlessly together by design to support reproducible, clinical-grade workflows.

  • Custom Themes for Standardization: How to build company-specific themes that alter defaults, ensuring output automatically aligns with internal guidelines without requiring repetitive argument specifications.

  • Building Custom Extensions: When and how to supplement {gtsummary} with a supplemental R package to handle specialized reporting needs, leveraging {gtsummary}’s extension framework to simplify development.

By the end of the session, you will understand how to extend this open-source tool with institution-specific functionality to balance flexibility with company-wide standardization.

Getting started

The workshop is hands-on. You can work through the exercises either in Posit Cloud or on your own machine — whichever you prefer. Get set up now; we’ll walk through it together at the top of the session.

Bookmark this site either way. You’ll reference it throughout the workshop, and the exercise code lives on the Exercises + Solutions page.

Option 1: Posit Cloud

Nothing to install — the workshop packages are already there. R/Pharma has granted everyone $2 of AI credits to use during the workshop. You must select the GLM 5.3 Flash model to maximize your budget.

Sign up for Posit AI using the same email address you used to register for the conference. The credits are matched to that address — sign up with a different one and they won’t be there when we start.

We will be using AI for our exercises in this workshop.

How to start your workshop assignment

  1. Join the space. The link will be provided during the workshop.

  2. Locate the project. Click -> New Project -> New Project from Template -> rpharma-workshop-gtsummary-adoption-2026 -> OK

  3. Begin working. Posit Cloud duplicates the project into your personal workspace, creating your own independent version where you can write and save code.

Option 2: Your own machine

Install the workshop packages — this takes a few minutes, so start it before we get going. Open Positron/RStudio/your IDE alongside Zoom, and run:

install.packages(c("tidyverse",
                   "cards",
                   "cardx",
                   "gtsummary",
                   "broom.helpers",
                   "flextable",
                   "pharmaverseadam"))

This is the same as install.R in the workshop repo.
